Responsible for developing and implementing strategies for Notes/DBMS integration, workflow, agents, and forms/application development facilities. Managed relationships with DBMS-related Notes partners including leading DBMS vendors; responsible for Lotus’ commitment to and strategy for ODBC. Analyzed competitive products and vendors. Specified detailed product marketing and feature requirements. Developed and presented technical briefings for customers, press, analysts, and industry conferences.


1991 - 1992 Principal Programmer/Analyst - DBA, Lotus IS
Technical leader and manager for the design, customization, and rollout of a comprehensive human resources and payroll-related client/server application, using SQL Server and PeopleSoft application tools. Designed and implemented a Sybase model to expedite PeopleSoft processing; the design was later adopted by PeopleSoft in its core product offering. Concurrently analyzed the overall Lotus database product strategy: prepared detailed market analysis, analyzed acquisition candidates, presented to Lotus senior management, and gained approval for recommendations.


1988 - 1991 Senior Applications Developer, Lotus Database Products Division
Contributed to the design and marketing of Lotus' database-related product efforts: a comprehensive set of OS/2-based database tools, DBMS interfaces, and data access from 1-2-3 and other Lotus products. Researched and prepared a detailed comparative analysis of leading relational DBMSs. Worked with counterparts at Microsoft, Sybase, and Digital to define “SQL Connectivity,” which later served as the foundation for ODBC. Taught database and data modeling courses.

The Procter & Gamble Company, Systems Analyst, Corporate Data Architect (6/1986 - 8/1988)

Initiated and completed P&G's first corporate-level logical data model. Advised top MIS management of database and other core technology trends. Established SQL as an international P&G standard. Helped define data modeling and standards for P&G’s then-extensive Metaphor Data Interpretation System environment. Contributed to the development and support of an end user-driven, client/server, multi-DBMS data retrieval tool; wrote large portions of the user interface and query construction code. Developed database and data modeling training for and provided consulting to central, research, and plant P&G locations.

University of Minnesota, Teaching/Research Assistant, Head Teaching Assistant (9/1984 - 6/1986)

Programming consultant for COBOL and FORTRAN classes. As Head TA: led introductory lectures; supervised five other TAs and all consulting, exam, and assignment administration; also designed, coded, and implemented mainframe applications used by students in their project work. As Research Assistant: investigated cognitive science, problem formulation, and general decision sciences topics, reporting directly to the MBA and Ph.D. program director.

CMSI, Programmer/Analyst (10/1982 - 6/1984)

Contributed to the analysis, design, development, and operation of a large insurance claims-processing system. Projects consisted of on-line, queue-driven COBOL/Prime DBMS claim-processing applications. Ported the entire front-end processing portion of the application from high-end to departmental-level Prime configurations; single-handedly rewrote claim data input and queue management programs. Initiated and led a comprehensive application process and data modeling review. Trained other development team members in structured analysis and system design techniques. Led code review and other quality assurance efforts.
